Mexico embraces the learning city concept

Cities across Mexico continue to adopt the learning city concept following the second International Conference on Learning Cities (ICLC), which took place in Mexico City in 2015. This is a recognition of how learning cities promote sustainable development and what it takes to implement the learning city strategy in their communities.
To facilitate these developments, several events and training sessions for mayors and city officials will take place in Mexico from 30 January to 2 February 2018. The aim of these events is to further develop stakeholders’ understanding of the learning city concept, and enhance dialogue and action to advance its implementation.
On 30 January 2018, there will be a training workshop in the city of Santiago, state of Nuevo León; this will be followed by events in Puebla, in the state of Puebla, on 1 and 2 February. Around 30 mayors and education officers from the two regions are expected to attend the latter event to gain fresh insights and discover best practice examples on various core areas of action for building learning cities. Discussions are expected to cover themes such as planning, involving stakeholders, celebrating learning, making learning accessible to everyone, and monitoring the development and mobilization of funds for successful learning city development.
The UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning’s publications, Guidelines for Building Learning Cities and Learning Cities and the SDGs: A Guide to Action, will inform the events in order to enhance participants’ understanding of the interrelation between the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the learning city concept.
Santiago, Nuevo León and Puebla have taken the initiative to collaborate with the UNESCO Office in Mexico and UIL in order to stage these training workshops.
